San Juan de Ortega to Burgos
The Camino Francés route from San Juan de Ortega to Burgos covers approximately 16.5 miles (26.6 km). Starting at an altitude of 3,307 feet (1,008 meters) and descending to 2,838 feet (865 meters) at its conclusion, this section offers pilgrims a varied and scenic journey through the Spanish countryside. Along the way, we pass through several quaint villages, including Ages, Atapuerca, Cardenuala Riopico, and Orbaneja Ripico.
Ages

Nestled in the Spanish countryside, the quaint village of Ages is renowned for its historic church, Iglesia de Santa Eulalia de Merida. The church, dedicated to Santa Eulalia de Merida, symbolizes Ages’ rich heritage and spiritual importance along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

A stork’s nest adorns the church tower. Expect more sightings on the Meseta in the coming days.

Atapuerca

In 1994, the modest municipality of Atapuerca gained global recognition with the discovery of fossil bones belonging to the Homo genus in several caves within its vicinity. Dating back approximately 800,000 years, these discoveries shed light on human evolution and have placed Atapuerca on the World Heritage List since 2000.

Alto de Atapuerca

After passing through Atapuerca, we encounter a rocky ascent that spans several miles, leading to the plateau. At its highest point, reaching 3,540 feet (1,078 meters), a wooden cross stands, marking a significant milestone on the journey.

Shortly thereafter, a breathtaking view of Burgos unfolds before us, offering a moment of awe and reflection. Following this, the path takes us on a rocky descent, guiding us toward our destination.
Cardenuela Riopico

Afterward, we pass through another very small village, Cardenuela Riopico.
Quintanilla Riopico

Quintanilla Riopico is a quaint village just a few hundred feet from the Camino de Santiago route.
Orbaneja Riopico

Another small village, Orbaneja Riopico, similarly faces the challenge of declining population as we continue along the route.
Via Villafria or Via Castanares?
After Orbaneja Riopico, we have two options to continue our journey toward Burgos. The first option is the historic route via Villafria, which veers northward, passing by the airport and traversing the industrial and commercial areas of the region.

Opting for the more scenic route, I followed the path south of the airport via Castanares. This route offers picturesque views and largely follows the Rio Arlanzon River, providing a tranquil and scenic journey towards Burgos.
Burgos

Next on our journey along the Camino is Burgos. Situated in the northern region of Castile and León, Burgos is a city brimming with history, culture, and architectural grandeur. Once the capital of the Kingdom of Castile, Burgos carries a legacy that spans centuries, making it a captivating destination for pilgrims and travelers alike.
