Belorado to San Juan de Ortega
The Camino Francés route from Belorado to San Juan de Ortega covers approximately 14.9 miles (24 kilometers), starting at an altitude of 2,569 feet (783 meters) and ending at 3,307 feet (1008 meters). Along this leg of the journey, pilgrims traverse through several quaint villages, including Tosantos, Villambistia, Espinosa del Camino, and Villafranca Montes de Oca.
Tosantos
As we journey towards Tosantos, our path predominantly winds its way along the left bank of the Rio Retorto stream. The tranquil waters meander gently through the countryside, reflecting the verdant landscape that surrounds us.
Villambistia
On the way to Villambistia, a slightly uphill path unfolds, revealing a beautiful vista of the surrounding landscape.
Espinosa del Camino
As we make our way between Espinosa del Camino and Montes de Oca, the path leads us through rolling hills adorned with verdant fields stretching as far as the eye can see.
Villafranca Montes de Oca
Moving forward, we arrive at Villafranca Montes de Oca, nestled at the base of the Oca Mountains.
Between Villafranca Montes de Oca and San Juan de Ortega, we traverse the Oca Mountains, rising to an altitude of 3,773 feet (1,150 meters) above sea level. This segment covers approximately 7.8 miles (12.5 kilometers) and winds mostly through dense forest terrain.
Particularly in the summer months, it’s crucial to carry an ample water supply to combat the heat. The elevation gain and rugged trail make this portion physically demanding, but the tranquil atmosphere of the forest offers its own sense of serenity, making it a notable segment of our journey along the Camino Francés.
San Juan de Ortega
Named after the saint dedicated to aiding pilgrims, the small hamlet of San Juan de Ortega holds a cherished place in our hearts. It’s not just about the historical monastery or the saint’s miracles; it’s about the sense of connection and reflection we find here.
As we walk through the ancient monastery, with its Romanesque architecture and the tomb of San Juan de Ortega, we’re reminded of the countless others who’ve passed this way in search of something greater than themselves. This place offers us a pause, a moment to marvel at the natural beauty around us and to connect with fellow travelers.
