Camino Frances – Day 4 – Puente la Reina

Pamplona to Puente la Reina

The Camino Francés route from Pamplona to Puente la Reina covers a distance of approximately 13.7 miles (22 kilometers), guiding pilgrims through the beautiful landscapes of northern Spain. Beginning at an altitude of 448 meters (1,470 feet) in Pamplona and ending at an altitude of 358 meters (1,175 feet) in Puente la Reina, this segment of the pilgrimage offers a diverse and rewarding journey.

As we embark on our trek from Pamplona, we pass through several charming villages and towns, each with its own unique attractions and landmarks. Today, our path leads us through the towns of Cizur Menor, Cizur Mayor, Zariquiegui, Uterga, Muruzabal, and Obanos.

Cizur Menor

Cizur Menor is the first village encountered on the route. It is known for Iglesia Sanjuanista. The only remaining remnant of a medieval monetary, which offers a glimpse into the area’s historical significance.

With few remaining medieval roots, Cizur Mayor is a modern suburb distinguished by its contemporary ambiance.

Zariquiegui

Zariquiegui is home to the Church of San Andrés, a 13th-century structure offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside and serving as a spiritual respite for pilgrims.

The journey then leads to Alto del Perdón, where pilgrims are greeted by iconic pilgrim statues and panoramic vistas, providing a memorable experience along the route.

Uterga

Continuing on, pilgrims pass through Uterga, where the Church de la Asuncion stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage and architectural prowess.

Muruzabal

Muruzabal is the next stop, featuring the Church of San Esteban, renowned for its Romanesque architecture and adorned with beautiful frescoes and sculptures.

Finally, the journey concludes in Obanos, where pilgrims can marvel at the stunning Gothic architecture of the Church of San Juan Bautista, a true gem of the Camino Francés.

Puente La Reina

The town of Puente la Reina, meaning “The Queen’s Bridge,” holds significant historical and cultural importance along the Camino Francés. Situated in the province of Navarre, Spain, Puente la Reina is named after the iconic 11th-century Romanesque bridge that spans the Arga River. This bridge was commissioned by Queen Doña Mayor, wife of King Sancho III, to facilitate the safe passage of pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostela.
