Camino Frances – Day 5 – Estella

Puente la Reina to Estella

The Camino Francés route from Puente la Reina to Estella spans approximately 13.5 miles (21.7 km) and offers a modest elevation change from the starting altitude of 1,175 feet (358 m) to an ending altitude of 1,368 feet (417 m). Along our journey, we pass through the towns of Maneru, Cirauqui, Lorca, and Villatuerta. This picturesque section of the journey weaves through the heart of Navarre, inviting pilgrims and travelers to immerse themselves in the diverse landscapes and historical sites that define northern Spain.

Commencing in the charming town of Puente la Reina, known for its iconic medieval bridge that has aided pilgrims for centuries, the route gradually unfolds towards the village of Maneru. This segment ascends slightly, revealing rolling fields and vineyards that characterize the region. Maneru, perched at an elevation that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, serves as the first notable stop after Puente la Reina, allowing travelers to experience the serenity of rural Spain.

Cirauqui

Continuing on, the path leads to Cirauqui (Zirauki), a hilltop town that preserves its medieval street layout and Roman road remnants. The journey from Maneru to Cirauqui involves an ascent, offering pilgrims the opportunity to wander through time as they navigate the ancient streets and structures that have witnessed countless footsteps over the millennia.

Beyond Cirauqui, the Camino descends into the valley before reaching Lorca, a small village where the sense of community and hospitality is palpable.

The Camino de Santiago traverses through Calle Mayor in Lorca, a charming thoroughfare lined with an array of inviting restaurants. Here, pilgrims can pause, rejuvenate, and indulge in delectable snacks to replenish their energy for the journey ahead.

Villatuerta

The route then proceeds to Villatuerta, another emblematic stop that showcases the rich agricultural heritage of the area. Villatuerta’s charm lies in its simplicity and the warm welcome offered by its residents, making it a memorable part of the Camino experience.

Estella

The final stretch to Estella is marked by a gentle ascent, culminating in the arrival at this historic town known for its beauty and cultural significance. Estella, with an elevation of 1,368 feet (417 m), offers travelers a wealth of architectural and historical treasures, from the Church of San Pedro de la Rúa to the Palace of the Kings of Navarre.
