Castrojeriz to Fromista
The Camino Francés route from Castrojeriz to Fromista spans approximately 15.9 miles (25.6 kilometers) through the picturesque Spanish countryside. Beginning at an altitude of 2,677 feet (816 meters) and ending at 2,566 feet (782 meters), this segment provides a diverse landscape for us. Along the way, we will encounter the Ermita de San Nicolas de Fuente Fitero and pass through the charming villages of Itero de la Vega and Boadilla del Camino. This journey offers a rich cultural experience amidst stunning landscapes, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the history and beauty of the Camino.
Alto de Mostelares

Shortly after Castrojeriz, the route ascends to 2,982 feet (909 meters) at Alto de Mostelares. Subsequently, it descends as steeply as it ascended, offering a challenging yet rewarding journey through varied terrain.

Ermita de San Nicolas

In the San Nicolas church, a small hostel is available for pilgrims.

After crossing the Rio Pisuerca river, we enter the Province of Palencia, marking our fourth Spanish province on this pilgrimage. Like Burgos, Palencia is part of the Castilla y Leon region.

Itero de la Vega

With its serene and peaceful atmosphere, Itero de la Vega offers pilgrims a small yet tranquil retreat along the Camino. The Cafe Bar Tachu is a convenient spot for us to grab a quick snack.
Boadilla del Camino
Amidst our journey towards Boadilla del Camino, we’re greeted by the enchanting sight of a corn poppy field adorned with a solitary tree.

Boadilla del Camino welcomes us as a tranquil, agricultural village along our journey. Nestled amidst the Spanish countryside, the village exudes rustic charm with its traditional two-story buildings and quaint streets.

At its heart stands the Iglesia de Santa Maria, a historic church adorned with stork nests on its tower, adding to the village’s timeless appeal. Surrounding the village are fields of vibrant corn poppies, contributing to the picturesque landscape.
Canal de Castilla
As the first light of dawn breaks over the Canal de Castilla, the tranquil waters reflect the soft hues of the sky. Silhouetted against the rising sun, the canal’s still surface mirrors the surrounding landscape, creating a serene and captivating scene. The trees and fields stand in quiet anticipation of the new day ahead. It’s a moment of quiet beauty and tranquility, capturing the essence of the canal’s timeless allure in the early morning light.

Construction of the Canal de Castilla began in 1753, driven by the need to facilitate the transportation of agricultural goods across the provinces of Burgos, Palencia, and Valladolid. This engineering marvel spans over 128.6 miles (207 kilometers) and features locks, aqueducts, and reservoirs.

Today, the canal primarily serves as an irrigation system and leisure destination, catering to cyclists, hikers, and boating enthusiasts. It offers tranquil paths and scenic views, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and natural beauty while enjoying recreational activities along its banks.
