Terradillos de los Templarios to Bercianos del Real Camino
Today’s leg of the Camino Frances takes us from Terradillos de los Templarios to Bercianos del Real Camino, covering a distance of approximately 14.4 miles (23.2 kilometers). We begin our journey at an altitude of 2,887 feet (880 meters) and descend to 2,789 feet (850 meters) by day’s end. Along the way, we pass through the charming villages of Moratinos and San Nicolas del Real Camino, as well as the bustling city of Sahagun. Join me as we traverse through picturesque landscapes.
Moratinos
The charming village of Moratillos is renowned for its traditional bodegas, which were historically used to store food and produce wine. Bodega El Castillo, a restaurant with a small outdoor terrace, stands out in the village. What makes this restaurant uniquely appealing is its ancient cellar vault, dating back several centuries, which serves as an intriguing interior setting for diners.
San Nicolas del Real Camino
Until the 19th century, San Nicolas del Real Camino was known as San Nicolas del Camino Frances. The village features the Casa Barrunta restaurant, open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is a favorite stop for travelers. It marks the final village in the province of Palencia, with the Ermita de la Virgen del Puente situated just within the neighboring province of Leon. Both provinces are part of the Castilla y Leon region.
Sahagun
Sahagun is a small town and municipality in the province of Leon. The town’s name derives from the Latin “Sanctus Facundus”. It has a rich history dating back to Roman times, including a significant monastery founded in honor of martyrs Facundus and Primitivus. Sahagun became a key religious and cultural center by the Middle Ages, endowed with royal privileges and known for its Mudejar architecture. Today, it remains a vital stop for pilgrims and hosts notable historical sites.
Sahagun also boasts a train station, a bullring, several churches, diverse lodging options, including hotels and hostels, and various dining establishments, from restaurants to snack bars.
Bercianos del Real Camino
The small town of Bercianos del Real Camino is a picturesque locale characterized by numerous buildings constructed in the traditional style with clay. It offers ample accommodations with four hostels and two hotels, some of which provide meals. For self-catering visitors, there’s a daily-open supermarket.
